How To Go “Vintage”
By Mona R. Karaoui
The price for vintage has taken a jump in the past few years, with cat fights between celebrities to get their hands on Louis Vuitton’s first edition totes, Hermes’s home accessories and more. If a piece has lived through the decades, you do know it will withstand time regardless of trends and emerging styles – and will simply never be “out” of fashion. Should you then go ahead and throw yourself at the very first pair of vintage pearl earrings you eye online or in a vintage boutique? Not really!

Here are 4 Top tips to keep in mind when hunting for your vintage treasure:
1. Make sure the piece you’re eying is in good condition: in the case of clothes or furniture, make sure blemishes (no, not the stylish decorative ones) are minimal. There is not much that you can do to fix stains or holes in a garment or a piece of furniture, let alone a vintage garment or furniture. The condition of your vintage buy is of utmost importance!
2. Watch out for quality: aim for quality fabrics. A “disposable” couch that Coco Chanel had on display in her summer haven a decade back is obviously still made of “disposable” fabric today. It’s quality- not the brand name that counts!
3. Look for the style, not the name: May it be jewelry, clothes or furniture, make sure you are choosing something you know you will make good use of in your closet, your office or your house. Always go along with your taste before others. You are making the investment and only you will reap the results.
4. Mix vintage with modern: Whether it’s an accessory, a dress or a vintage dining table, once you have vintage paired with modern, you will stir a fuss and definitely stand out from the crowds.
Vintage anyone?!
